Maddie, Katherine, and Mary, Quite Contrary. How does Your Garden Grow?

So, I love my little sisters a lot! And of course, I love my little brothers too, but theres something about a girl in a frilly dress... and I happen to love to make frilly dresses!

Since it is my weekend, I decided to stop at Hancock Fabrics and take a look at their discount fabric section. I happily found a bunch, but narrowed it down to 3 different materials: a flower striped pattern, a purple with flowers all over, and a pretty little pink patchwork pattern.

I had a couple ideas for the style for each girl: Mary likes long to the floor and loose, Katherine likes princessy and comfy with colors, and Maddie, she loves to twirl. and since shes so little, I figure a shorter dress would help her stay mobile! It gets hot, and those poor girls can't handle the heat at all (we are all alike), and so nothing too restrictive. They can always add layers if they want! I sat down to look at some patterns to get an idea on some of the details. Found some and decided to tweak them a little to fit my own style.. so the second I got home, and took my dog outside, I began to sew!

When I went outside, I took Coffee for a little walk, and took some pictures of flowers I saw!

Isn't it pretty!?

More pretty flowers! Sorry they are a little blurry... Coffee tried to chase after a bird at that exact moment!

And now the sewing! This is Mary's dress' fabric. I started sewing the neckline with a large hem, so I can thread a braid I made through it. That is my straps for the dress. Her dress is simple and loose, with a large light green frill on the bottom! She's pretty tom boyish, and very clumsy (she trips over air), so something that moves with her will be perfect!

Next, is Maddie's dress. I took about 5 feet of fabric to make a very gathered and puffy skirt! How to make a good gather: set your stich to a very loose setting, and sew along the top of a single piece of fabric.. After the fabric is sewn all the way, pull gently on the bobbin thread until the fabric bunches. Carefully pull the bunches further down the bobbin thread. If the thread breaks, you have to start over!

Ok, so I couldn't get it upright, and it's blurry.. I'm still getting the hang of this blog thing~
This is Maddies dress again, and the massively gathered skirt, and a cute little frill on the end, and the bodice is two pieces of fabric sewn together. its really cute!

I'm quite proud of this part: its the sleeves.. the fabric was sewn into a tube, and then looped around two times.. the loops are to sit on top of the shoulder like a sort of cap or gathered sleeve. the rest of it is attached to the dress like little straps.

Moving on to Katherines dress: I only had a small amount of blue fabric to work with (the green blue and pink accent colors were all scraps), so I had to make a few extra stiches here and there. but I was able to make it work an damazingly, it should fit her! I took her striped fabric and made little slanted panels to go as a cover over the blue. her dress is a little rope halter. and I put a zipper in the back to it'll stay on her!

Here's the final products on all the dresses! from left to right: Katherine (blue), Maddie (pink), and Mary (green). I hope you like the dresses!

I showed my parents and they think I should be a clothing designer. Maybe.. I s'pose I'll look into it.. Its really fun, and I just love doing this stuff anyways!
The girls are very excited for their new dresses, so now big sister has to make the boys something (I've never made boy clothes.. just costumes) and still send it to them before summer is over! Whew!!! I hope I can do it!
Dad requested a new article of clothing too, but I don't think I'll comply! ;-p

Hope you enjoyed the pics!!
